Reading the map
A count-based map uses circles whose areas scale with the displayed count or absolute change. A density or percentage-growth map shades geographic areas instead. Large land areas can dominate a shaded map even when relatively few residents live there; read the legend and exact table rather than treating visual area as population.
Negative change is indicated by a hatch on the shaded view or a dashed circle on the count view, in addition to a signed value in the source tooltip and table. State shapes are generalized for a national view and do not support street-level boundary research. Alaska and Hawaii are inset at different scales, so distances cannot be measured between these panels.
Density divides the July 1, 2025 resident population by 2025 land area, excluding water. Annual growth uses the compatible July 1, 2024 population as its denominator.
