These are original decennial census counts from the Census Bureau’s historical population-change table. They are separate from the July annual estimates in the explorer. Historical territory and census definitions apply; the observations are not standardized to the 2025 national footprint.

Supported history and geographic definitions
Annual coverage is July 1, 2020 through July 1, 2025 for the United States, all states and DC, county equivalents and validated incorporated places. All six annual observations are taken from Vintage 2025, rather than choosing each year from a different publication. The estimates base dated April 1, 2020 is available on profiles but is not inserted as an annual July observation.
Decennial census coverage is 1910–2020 for the nation, states and DC. This historical collection follows the Census Bureau’s published historical table and retains its historical geographic definitions; it is not harmonized to 2025 boundaries. Census counts are not estimates bases. Alaska and Hawaii have historical observations from before statehood. Historical national coverage and territory definitions must be checked when interpreting a long interval.
Indexed series set the first selected valid population to 100 and divide later populations by that same observation. They help compare relative movement without disguising the base year. Indexing is unavailable for a zero starting population. Unsupported census series for counties or cities remain unavailable and are not interpolated.
