Austin City and County Population Growth Are Different Stories

Austin had 1,002,632 residents on July 1, 2025, compared with 998,607 in July 2024. The annual change was 4,025 residents, or 0.40%. From July 2020 to July 2025, the whole-city population changed by 4.21%.

This is geographic code 4805000, a whole SUMLEV 162 incorporated-place observation. It is not a metropolitan-area total and not merely Austin’s portion inside Travis County. The source relationships identify 4 counties associated with the city: Bastrop County, Hays County, Travis County, Williamson County.

Travis County had 1,389,670 residents in 2025, with a latest annual change of 14,749 or 1.07%. Williamson County had 752,827, changing by 23,814 or 3.27%. Each county contains residents outside Austin as well as people in its overlapping portion of the city.

The table intentionally labels city and county rows by type. It is a contextual comparison, not an additive breakdown. Summing Austin, Travis County and Williamson County would count some residents more than once; subtracting the whole Austin total from Travis County would also be incorrect because Austin spans county boundaries.

An Austin city population change also does not prove the volume of relocation into or out of the entire surrounding region. A wider region would require an explicit set of non-overlapping counties or a validated metropolitan definition.
